Insomniac's Best Friend
I suggested this product after doing some research, to help a friend, for whom Melatonin was not working. She had to get prescription sleep meds, but was trying to cut down on the amount of meds she was taking.I also suggested the book: "I Can Make You Sleep," by Ian McKenna. She got the taurine, and it works for her. The book, she has not yet purchased.I bought the taurine for my cats, and dogs as well because their food contains insufficient quantities for their needs.

I Think It's Working For Sleep!
Read an article about Taurine helping with aging, but didn't know it would help me sleep! I tried trazodone, but it swells my nose to the point I have to breathe through my mouth. Melatonin doesn't work like it used to. Maybe it's placebo effect, or maybe less stress in my life, but I've been sleeping so well when taking 500 mg. taurine before bed.

Price point is fabulous
My dogs have to take this twice daily, so I’m unable to communicate with them about the performance of the supplement. However, their cardiologist says that their heart is and has remained healthy. I have this on AutoShip, the quality and price point match perfectly.

Great for its calming effect (daytime and nighttime)
I bought these for its purported good effect on mood and as a calming agent. I find it to work very well in both regards. The best way I can describe its effect is that of a warm glove for your outlook/experience. It has a settling feeling, it doesn't make you drowsy at all, rather relaxed. It is a great antidote to over-stimulated nerves and insomnia, meaning you can easily take it in the morning or through the day to calm your nerves without making you sleepy. But you can also take it in the evening before bed-time to get you into a more restful mood to make falling asleep easier (to combat insomnia). These two effects really make this a wonderful product/amino acid. The smaller dosage of 500mg/pill also makes it easy to experiment with how much you need at any given time. Usually, 500mg works well enough for me, but I've take 1000mg/1g at a time when necessary and the effects are greater.Considering that some sports drinks have up to 7000mg/7g (!) of taurine in them, and many studies have been done on taurine (it's non-toxic even in extremely high doses), you can also rest easy that you can't overdo it.

Great for sleep. Use cautiously though.
I started using taurine a few weeks ago because I'd read that it might help with sleep. It really does. When I take it at night, I usually go to sleep almost immediately, sleep all through the night, a deep refreshing sleep, and wake up feeling wonderfully refreshed. (This is especially true if I take it with magnesium.)So why only four stars? Because it has a side effect that concerns me. When I take taurine for several days in a row, I sometimes have trouble with my short term memory "the morning after." (But then again, lack of sleep can be bad for your memory too, so it's a trade-off really.)In my own case, after taking taurine almost every night for two or three weeks, I began experiencing short term memory problems. I'd get up to go to another room, then forget why I'd gone there. I'd click to open a web page, then forget why I'd opened it. My memory is usually sharp and clear, so I suspected the taurine (the only thing new in my regamine) might be responsible. So I did a web search for "taurine short term memory problems." Among some other entries, I found this one on the Herb2000 web page:"No toxic effects have been recorded with the use of supplemental taurine in any person using such supplements... However, taking very large doses of taurine can induce the loss of short term memory in individuals using the supplement."Apparently 500 mg was a large dose in my case. Or maybe it was a cumulative effect from taking it every night. When I stopped taking it, my memory immediately (literally the next day) snapped back to normal. So what to do? I love the quality of sleep I (usually) get when I take taurine. It's deep and highly relaxing. I don't take it every night, because I'm wary of the short term memory problems, but if I take it once or twice a week, it seems fine. I'd recommend caution. If you start having memory problems, cut back on your dose or stop taking it for a while.

Finally found something that works for me..
I have MS and have had problems with nighttime restless legs and leg cramps for years. I've tried so many different drugs and products but nothing worked or had intolerable side effects. Taurine, coupled with a magnesium supplement, has finally brought me relief. It also seems to counter the groggy side effects of other meds and promotes a better sense of well-being. I told my parents about it and they talked to their doctor and now my dad takes it to help lower his cholesterol. As with any supplement I would recommend checking with your own doctor before taking this especially if you take other meds or have a medical condition. (Although my experience has been that many doctors are not big on supplements!)
