Frasier (2023): Season One [DVD]

Back to Boston
Frasier is back. Kelsey Grammer spent twenty years playing the role across both Cheers and Frasier. Now, twenty years later, he returns to the part. This is a ten episode season. Each episode running about twenty seven mins each [approx]. They're spread across two discs. We meet Frasier again as he moves back to Boston. Where he reunites with his son Frederick. Who is now a firefighter. He has an apartment there. Where Frederick and a friend of his also live. Also around a lot is David Crane. Niles's and Daphne's grown up son. There's a bar they frequent. Frasier works with old British friend Alan [Nicholas Lyndhurst] and work colleague Olivia.Frasier is now famous nationwide. Reasons. He's looking for new purpose in life and to teach. Also to reconnect with his son. But he's still the same old Dr. Crane....I loved the original. I didn't like the idea of a return. Because I thought it would spoil the end of the original. But I gave this a go anyway.I am so glad I did. It's nice to have something made in the same old sitcom style. It does use the first episode to set things up. But from the second, it really clicks. And it is hugely funny on a great many occasions.Same old Sitcom style means it's mostly done on interiors and the same few sets. But that works. It's also Frasier with the experience of the past twenty years behind him and now a man in his sixties. He is written and played as such. Added to which, at the heart of this is the story of a man and his son trying to reconnect with each other. Which is ultimately really rather touching.Situations arise out of Frasier's usual attitude and behaviour. The writing really, as with the original show, knows how to write farce properly. So the way the plots of these episodes go is really superb to watch. The supporting cast are also very able support. David isn't entirely like his dad, which seems like a good way to play it.It does have some continuity also. Spoilers. Which was really nice to see.I'm so glad I watched this. It was a fun reunion, and it was also very funny indeed. You might not like it yourself, but I would recommend giving it a try and being open minded. Because that worked for me.The dvd has the following language and subtitle options:Languages: English. German.Subtitles: English. German. There's one extra. A seven minute long gag reel. This does also have some behind the scenes shots. Not the most amazing gag reel ever humour wise, but there's a nice sense of togetherness with the behind the scenes stuff. So it was worth it for that.

Best TV show ever
Frasier has and always will be, my favourite tv show ever. The reboot isn’t as good because there is no Martin or Niles but it still has charm, still funny and series 2 is better at this point. Any Frasier is better than no Frasier and shout out to Freddie and Eve who are great characters. In the original Frasier, Frasier, IMO was not the best character, that goes to Martin and in this reboot I would say Alan (a fantastic Nicholas Lyndhurst) is the best character. Well worth a watch if you enjoyed the original show.

Good but could do better
Not as good as the original but still eminently worth seeing. The supporting cast is not as strong and much as I like him in other things Nicholas Lyndhurst is playing a very weird character. I hope they continue with him but perhaps make him a bit stronger as a character in future.

Worth easing yourself into this new series
It takes a while to adjust to the different cast especially no Eddy. But Kelsey Grammer easily slips back into his finicky but well meaning character.I look forward to another series as part of the charm and enjoyment of the “old” Frasier was character development and familiarity.

FRASIER 2023 DVD
Believe me - I so wanted to enjoy this "reboot" of the much loved series, but sadly, for me, and my wife, it has fallen rather flat. Why? The following is of course purely personal views, and can safely be ignored. The Scripts! They now feel so forced, desparate even to get a laugh. The acerbic one-liners are there but fail to hit home. The casting. "Freddie" - I just can't accept the almost butch fireman as being the adult Freddie (who admittadly did lust after Daphne in his juvenile fashion). Nephew "David" - did he really have to be such an idiot? Niles was NOT an idiot - pompous yes, but idiot - NO. The college principal. The writers make her out to be a flighty, rather silly person. Hardly likely to hold such a position. All my coments really do concern the writers. If only they could sit back for series 2 and make some/all character changes then the whole could well work again. This is not to say there aren't moments, but for me - too few and far between. I hope I am in the minority. (P.S I haven't mentioned Lyndhurst/Niles 8 out of 10 and get a new haircut!) P.P.S....I carried out an experiment for my own amusement! So - If you have it take season 4 at random of the original. Pick almost any episode. My wife and I laughed out loud at least once and smiled a lot. Now pick any ep from the reboot and compare. Did you actually laugh out loud? How many smiles? For us, very sadly, no laughs, few smiles. Yes, I know comparisons are odious etc but it was interesting. See what you find!
