It's perfect. Wish we had it a long time ago!
It cannot be exaggerated how great this little blade is. It saves a tremendous amount of time when skinning a deer. It's incredibly sharp and intuitive to use. We've never used a knife like this before and it was a game changer. The quality is what you'd expect from Gerber. It's honestly an incredible value for the money. I highly recommend it to any hunter and or butcher or outdoorsman. You won't be disappointed!

Fits in my hand perfectly, very comfortable to cut with
I bought it a few months ago to use for deer season but have used it to cut vegetables and steaks when camping. I'm buying another so I have one in my truck and one for hunting.

Comfortable to hold, nice sharp blade
This is cool, it’s fashioned after an Alaskan Ulu knife. I have owned and used an Ulu for as long as I can remember, they are great for breaking down meat. You can see this next to a genuine Ulu, it’s a bit modified in design but works in a similar way. It’s very comfortable to hold, much more so then my old one, the handle is very ergonomic. The blade is nice and sharp. It’s a bummer it’s not made in Portland, this one is made in China. I like this knife but if I could change one thing, I would have liked to have had the front edge of the knife where it angles back, to have also had a cutting edge. That way I could cut while skinning on the back swing as well as the down swing. Other then that, It’s a decent well made knife, I like it.

Big and little at the same time?
This is a solid little chopper. It's little and easy to carry around, yet it does pack a little punch when it needs to.(Though it doesn't really have a ton of weight behind it, so it does feel just a tad bit awkward at times when chopping.)Other than that though, I really have no complaints so far with this Ulu. The edge retention has seemed decent from the tests I've put it through. (I did get a tiny edge roll, but that was from hitting a nail in a board, so I can't blame the ulu for that.)The handle/grip are a little on the thin side for my personal liking when chopping. At the same time though, I do appreciate not having a big "hatchet" sized ulu on my belt, so I appreciate the small size of the handle as well. If it were much thicker, it would definitely be awkward to hang on your belt.Even though the handle is a little on the thin side, it still is comfortable and there are no weird pressure points or anything when using it. I chopped at a few boards and logs for awhile just to test this out and my hand felt perfectly fine while/after chopping. (Like I said, no weird pressure points, vibrations, etc..)Also, I really don't mind the sheath for this? It's nothing special, but I like that it has the button and the "hook and loop" closure. That way, if for some reason you forgot/didn't button the snap button, the hook and loop (velcro) would most likely hold it in.So overall, if you're looking for a little ulu, this one seems to work well from my testing and I'd recommend giving it a try if you're looking for one of these!

Cuts, slices, and dices with no issues
This knife belongs to the Gerber Gear Downwind series of which at the time of purchase and this writing, are three: Caper, Ulu, and Drop Point. As such reviews for all three will share the initial part of the review with specific details of each model towards the end (It is not lengthy so fear not). All three knives share the same engineering, design, and materials. The handles are layered G10 that give it a tree bark look, will last a lifetime and a half, and all have (finally! ) real lanyard holes and not pinprick sized holes like other knives. The G10 does seem a bit too smooth but they have jimping that a starts seamlessly continue t the blade. Each blade is stone washed, and very sharp. This review is for the Ulu, the chopper (as in food chopper) of the Downwind family. The angled profile blade works well for chopping veggies, meat, and other foodstuffs, however the flat handle works a bit against the user in this capacity when wearing gloves. Not enough to be bad but could be better. It also works as a decent slicer, and dare I say skinner, but it should be reserved for chopping, its main task. Still, if the need is there this knife will cut, slice, and dice with no issues.

Amazing Gerber Quality and Fantastic Look
I love the look of this ulu knife. It has a very rugged look and practical design. The sheath is made out of heavy canvas with an inner plastic liner. The closure snap is reinforced with hook and loop to keep from accidentally coming open. The stitching is very precise with rivets for added strength. The look and feel are great. The belt loop allows for a handle up position, with conveniently allows for a handle right position when carried on a pack strap. The handle of the knife is comfortable, but has enough texture to prevent slippage. There are thumb grooves for added control. The only disadvantage I see with the knife design is the distance between the handle and the blade. For people with smaller hands, there is room to spare and could promote twisting upon heavy force. The blade claims a "tall flat grind", which is kind of true. The blade tapers, but the knife edge is still a standard bevel like you would find on most Gerber knives.Overall, I am very pleased with this knife and would highly recommend you add it to your pack for field dressing large game.
