Q: Would this work on my canvas convertible top?

Hi! This product works on any natural materials that are water absorbent. To test, you can sprinkle some drops of water onto the top. If they absorb in, the dye should work, but if they bead up and roll off, the paint will not work well on the fabric. It will most likely work on an older style convertible that has a cloth top as opposed to a newer one. It works mostly like a dye or stain, so you cannot make anything lighter with the dye, only darker.

Fabric Spray Dye works best on natural materials that are water absorbent, such as cotton. It does not work on synthetic materials such as polyester, or any shiny materials. Perform the water test to test for absorbency. To do this, sprinkle some drops of water on an unworn section of the fabric you intend to dye and make sure it soaks in. If the water beads up, the dye will not work properly. For best results the water has to soak in eventually. Do not rub the water in to test for absorbency.

Because there are so many variables that come into play, such as fabric type, fabric color and user technique, it is hard to give a precise estimate for coverage per can. Our general guideline estimates are 1-3 cans for a smaller chair, 3-6 for a recliner, and 6-12 for a full size couch. Please keep in mind that these quantities are general estimates. Depending on the variables mentioned above, fewer or additional cans may be needed. Each fabric is different and takes the dye differently.
