High Quality Hay
I have been purchasing this brand and type (Timothy Hay, 2nd Cutting) for my rabbit for 3 years now. A couple times I waited too long to order and ran out and had to buy a different brand. Those other ones didn't compare. This hay is always fresh, never any pests that came along in the box, Easy to reclose over and over. My rabbit loves eating this. I buy the 12 pound box and it lasts about 3 months for my adult American Blue breed. She's approximately 7 pounds.

Best Hay! Good color, cut nicely, and soft!
This is the first time I am leaving a review for this product, but I have been buying Small Pet Select's brand of hay for the past several years and really, nothing in any big name store has compared. The price is by far the best per lb ratio, the hay always has a nice green coloring, the pieces are chopped smaller than store brands, and it's significantly softer than any hay I have purchased at a store.I recently went to the store to purchase hay since I only have 1 senior guinea pig remaining, and she does not eat as much as she used to, and was absolutely disappointed at the quality that stores sell. I immediately placed an order with small pet select for more, I am glad they offer a variety size of boxes since I will not need as much anymore.Though, once my piggie does pass, I probably will not get another. So with that said I hope this business continues to do well and sell the same great quality that they have provided me for the past several years.

For my bunny, Second Cutting is the way to go!
When I first got my bunny as a baby I was feeding him alfalfa hay along with other veggies and a few pellets - he was already eating regular food. The thing with the alfalfa hay is that he was picking out the softer stuff and leaving behind the "sticks", so when it came time to invest in hay my first purchase from SPS was 3rd cutting because it is "softer" - so I bought the 40lb box. I have done farm work in the past and I know about hay. My first impression was of how there was so much brown and so little green. I thought that would change as I used the hay but it didn't change much, and it turns out as an adult my bunny preferred the crunchier stuff. That wasn't a problem because there was plenty of crunchy stuff, but then we came to the last 1/3 of the box, which was all shreds, fluffy stuff and dusty stuff.I needed to buy more hay, and now knowing he prefers the crunchier stuff, I chose to purchase the 25lb box of second cutting from SPS. Wow! It was like night and day! 100% green, highly compressed (the top of the box was bulging when I got it) and the bunny absolutely loves it and is now eating more hay. I didn't even keep going with the old box, and I think this 25lb box is going to last longer than the bigger one! I have nothing to complain about with my purchase of second cutting, and have since found out that most bunnies are fed second cutting unless they are older and need softer hay, or picky eaters. The thing I know about 3rd cutting is that it is the one MOST affected by summer - whether there are dry conditions and for how long, etc. This product came perfectly packed, UPS dropped it a day early, and the quality of the hay is top notch. I will probably stick with this brand and second cutting now for the foreseeable future, and would recommend Small Pet Select.

Boys love it!
The boys love this hay! They always scream with excitement when I refill their pile. They eat almost all of it as it's a balanced mix of soft hay with few of those hard straw pieces. Lasts a long time too even with my 4 guinea pigs so good value.

Good Hay But Some Surprises
Our guinea pig boy is about a year old. I have been buying Oxbow and Kaytee Timothy hay for him, but decided to try some Small Pet Select. One thing we did not like about the Oxbow and Kaytee was the large number of heavy stalks that our boy would not eat, resulting in a lot of waste. I think the Oxbow and Kaytee are largely first cutting hay, so I figured we would try some SPS Second Cutting Timothy hay. This hay is very green and smells fresh. Our boy definitely eats it. But I was surprised to see so many heavy stalks - probably as many as in the other brands. And there were probably more flowerheads than in the other brands. That in itself is not a bad thing because the flowerheads are the part that our boy likes the best. But it was my understanding that the 2nd cutting would have relatively few flowerheads. I think that the waste with the SPS 2nd cutting is about the same as with the Oxbow and Kaytee, so there is no advantage to the SPS in that regard. So the SPS 2nd cutting timothy is all-in-all a mixed bag, but I think it is overall a quality product and I will probably continue to buy it. My suggestion to you: Try the SPS 3rd cutting Timothy hay. Our GP absolutely loves it! Maybe yours will, too.
