Perfect Lantern for Emergencies and Power Outages
I have several of these large “Juniper” Dietz lanterns for emergencies and power outages. They are bottom heavy and don’t tip over easily. The blue ones are very attractive and are an easy color to find during an emergency. I ordered extra lamp oil and wicks. I have not had one of these lanterns to leak yet, but as a precaution I always set my filled lanterns in an inexpensive aluminum roasting pan, even when they are not in use. When filled to 3/4 capacity, these lanterns will burn for several days on one fill-up. Having these lanterns gives me peace of mind that I will have light and some heat during a power out event.

Perfect for emergency situations
It’s perfect for power outages. Everyone should have a couple of these with an extra wick and extra oil you won’t be hurting for light if the power goes out.

HUGE Lantern - typical excellent Dietz quality!
I have many oil lanterns throughout my house - some as decoration (but fully functional) and others stationed/stored in the event of power outage. All are fueled and burned on rotating cycles to ensure functionality/serviceability.Previously, i bought inexpensive Wal-Mart-esque cheap lanterns thinking they were all the same. Not so!I haven't tried Feuerhand or other lantern brands aside from the cheapies, but the Dietz lanterns have proven to be an excellent balance of price/quality. Despite being made "off-shore" since the mid-1970's, the lanterns are made with the very same tools developed/made by the original Dietz company. This particular lantern (Dietz #2500 "Jupiter") has a HUGE, cavernous fuel reservoir - like 84oz - more than half a gallon! I say fuel because it requires Kerosene instead of regular lamp-grade oil. Others may 'correct' me, but per the manufacturer lamp oil should not be used.Anyway, the lantern is pretty bright as far as lanterns go - it's not LED bright, but bright enough to easily read by. There is some initial odor, but it's not too bad and I've gotten used to it so I now barely notice it. Also, these lanterns also put off some bit of heat. Noticeable if it's sitting nearby, but not like it's going to heat up an entire room.I keep the globe clean and dust-free as part of the regular maintenance and probably should order a couple back-up globes because the glass is very thin.

Use kerosene in this lantern
Great lantern! I put paraffin lamp oil in it and it would not wick up the oil very good. It just burned up the wick. I drained the lamp oil out, replaced the wick and filled it with kerosene and it burns wonderfully. USE KEROSENE and it will burn nicely. I'm thinking about using kerosene in my other Dietz lanterns. I don't really get a smell using kerosene.

Look Elsewhere
The metal is very this, and the glass is so this it will break almost immediately. If it will be lit and hung, it may be good, but as flimsy as it is, it is a fire hazard.

Not as heavy duty as originals.
It works.Production quality seems fine.Would gladly pay more for better quality materials which would make it more durable.
