Can one person operate this machine alone by stopping or putting it in park when there's no material and starting it when it's filled again?

You probably could although the momentum of the material pushes it along and it’s best to have someone running it to keep it on the line while someone else is shoveling material in the hopper. It’s easy enough to start and stop. Watch lots of videos and play with your mix. Well worth the money, great product once you get the hang of it. We played with just wet sand to get the hang of it at first and then on a board to get the knack of back pressure and ‘driving’ it.

Does this come with hand trowels?

Yes, however the trowel is not exactly the shape of the head that fits on the machine.
