Staff is not always qualified to assist with non-returnable items
I purchased an Asurion 3-year plan for a UPS unit (surge protector and battery backup) which just stopped working after a year and a half. I called Asurion to file a claim. The person who assisted me knew basically how to proceed, but did not understand when I tried to explain that a UPS unit cannot be returned because of hazardous waste issues. Her English was not very good. She said she would look into it, but obviously never did. Instead I got a return label and was told that my refund would be applied once the item was returned. I gave her a few days to do her research, then called Asurion again. This time, the person understood perfectly that the unit could not be returned; that I planned to take it to Staples office store to be recycled. He immediately put through the refund and confirmed it while I was still on the phone. My take-away is that the Asurion protection was worth it but make sure you get a person who understands English proficiently and is thoroughtly trained with exceptions to typical claim procedure.
