Your wife may even let you clean guns at the kitchen table!
OK, like most (if not all) of you over the age of 25, I too love the smell of Hoppes #9 (in the morning, in the afternoon, or in the evening!). It reminds me of my youth when I learned to clean my first hunting rifle I received for Christmas... But the problem with Hoppes (or any solvent based cleaner) is that my wife doesn't share my fondness for the smell. Nor do any other members of my family! That problem is solved with the M-Pro 7 cleaner. There is absolutely no smell, and it is water-soluble, so there's no greasy stains on the workbench (or kitchen table!).I was skeptical of these new water based gun cleaners, so I decided to try this on one of the dirtiest and trickiest firearms I have to clean - a CZ Scorpion 9mm carbine. I load my own rounds using HP-38/W231 and because it is so fun to shoot, I blow a LOT of rounds through it on a typical range day (100 to 500 rounds). After more than a few hundred rounds, it tends to get VERY carbon-fouled all over the action. Luckily it is very easy to field strip, but the mix of steel and polymer parts makes it tricky when cleaning with a solvent cleaner (I don't like to use solvents on polymer guns). Also, applying Hoppes #9 with cotton balls and hemostats is a pain.WIth this cleaner, I just strip the gun down and remove the action, then spray it all with M-Pro7. I wait a few minutes, then go to town on the action with some nylon brushes, wiping dry with paper towels. Then I hit the bore with a nylon bore brush and follow with patches and a jag, like I would with any other cleaner. Last step, I use a bit of the M-Pro7 oil.Bottom line, this stuff really seems to clean the carbon soot really well off both the metal and polymer parts, and the spray bottle makes it SOOO much easier to get up inside the action. The only downside is that because it is water-based, you have to make sure that the gun is completely dry and then oiled before putting away.If you're a Hoppes die-hard, give this stuff a try. Your wife might even let you clean your guns on the kitchen table so you aren't banished the the cold garage after a range trip. :-)

Awesome general purpose gun cleaner.
Amazon has the best price for this product in 32 ounce size, you'll pay at least twice as much per ounce at the big box stores that sell this like, Dick's, Bass Pro, Gander Mtn, or Walmart (Hoppes Elite brand), etc. As far as the cleaner goes, it's a "safer" cleaner that doesn't burn your skin. It uses the solvent Diethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether (DGBE), which is a type of glycol ether. Although some glycol ethers have been shown to cause adverse reproductive effects and birth defects in laboratory animals, DGBE does not show the same pattern of toxicity as these other glycol ethers. DGBE has low oral, dermal and inhalation toxicity. Still, when used improperly, DGBE can cause severe eye irritation and slight corneal injury. Wear eye protection, which you should do anyway when cleaning your guns as you can brush particles more harmful than DGBE into your eyes when using a brush or sprayer. The other thing to note is that this product is water based, about 85% of the bottle is water. DGBE is completely water soluble so it doesn't separate, but it evaporates very slowly compared to other solvents. I haven't had any guns rust while using M-Pro 7, but I follow up the cleaning with a quality gun lubricant and rust protectant. I find that M-Pro 7 cleans extremely well, better than most petroleum distillate products without that fuel additive smell. It is safe for all parts and finishes on my guns, wood, plastic, aluminum, stainless steel, blued steel, etc. It also doesn't eat plastic, feel greasy, leave any kind of film or smell bad. M-Pro 7 gun cleaner does not dissolve copper, if you have heavy copper fouling, you'll need to use a dedicated copper remover. However, over many years of owning and maintaining lots of firearms and experimenting with dozens of brands of wonder products, I can say that I haven't found one product that is the best at everything. This product however, has been part of my gun cleaning regimen for a few years now and likely will for years to come. I disassemble the gun and spray all parts down with M-Pro 7 gun cleaner, and let them soak for about 20 minutes. I scrub with brush, patches, picks, etc. Lubricate, (oil / grease) and reassemble.
