Q: I have ge 97f9856 40-5 , 440 capacitor. it’s fatter and bulkier than one shown here. can i use this instead?

As long as the capacitance and voltage values are the same then this capacitor will work, but you will need to modify the clamp (or add some rubber padding around smaller cap) to hold in place, do not leave loose. I replaced an oval cap with round style and it worked fine, just had to mod the hold-down clamp. As always, if you are unsure please consult with an HVAC repair tech or electrician.

Im not a tech..but I can give u a few tips that helped my outside central air repair. Try to manually jump start your unit, by spinning fan, use a stick or long screw driver. If it runs a compacitor replacement is probably your solution. .I was quoted $150 by tech..replaced mine myself for under $30..Key is try to buy one closest to your originial..and take pics or right notes..so you install it the same way you took old one off

Don't understand what you mean by protected. You can just match the old capacitor with something new as far as the Hz. The +/- 06% is the percentage range that the capacitor will operate efficiently. If this is for an air conditioning condenser, the Hz will be sufficient with the replacement capacitor. As long as you install it with the air handler & condenser breaker off or both disconnects out. The capacitor will be protected durng install. Make sure you mount it just as the old one was.

Picture clearly states "Made in Mexico", not China!
