Beats the Life Alert monthly fee!
Wonderful resource. We cancelled LifeAlert for my elderly mom and now we use this instead. You can program two numbers into what my mom calls her 'phone necklace'. We have my cell number programmed onto the pendant and my brother also. 911 is #3 and only pre-programmed onto the corded phone. A couple of accidental calls to 911 made us take 911 off the pendant. Be aware: the pendant needs to be charged. Mom never remembers this. She's from a generation that doesn't charge things every night. I moved the charger to her bedside table and put a note on it to 'hang up the phone necklace here at night and put it back on in the morning.'If it's charged the pendant announces the caller by the name that comes up on Caller ID. But it talks while the phone is ringing which is distracting to a person in their 80s. Mom has a hard time doing two things at once, so when the phone rings she reaches for it, and then it starts talking while it's ringing and she gets distracted trying to figure out what's it's saying to her. Sometimes she even forgets to answer the pendant around her neck and walks over to the table phone. The buttons on the back of the pendant are marked 1 and 2. We used a small label (http://www.amazon.com/Brother-P-touch-Office-Labeler-PT-D200/dp/B007TN092K) to mark them with my name and my brother's in case she forgets the programming in an emergency. All in all a great item. We've had zero trouble with it. It was easy to set up and program, but obviously Mom wouldn't have been able to do that on her own. When we bought it it was twenty dollars more than it's selling for now and it was a bargain then. I recommend it for any person, not just the elderly, who needs assistance with phone calling. The pendant is such a brilliant idea.We would prefer to have more programmable phone numbers. You can only put 4 total on this corded phone, and the first 2 have to be the same as the pendant. Mom had many more numbers that were pre-programmed into her old (corded) home phone. We set the old phone up in another location so she can still use it if she needs to.We don't miss LifeAlert. The only thing LA had that this one doesn't is the emergency 'puck' she could carry with her. She never used it but it looked impressively useful. It was small beeper looking thing with a big red button supposedly programmed for 911, but it had no speaker or any way for her to talk to someone, just a button. Since we sent that back to LifeAlert we've made some of those custom labels for mom's jitterbug phone with simple instructions in case of emergency. She takes it with her now instead of the 'red button'.Highly recommended. If you have any questions I'll be happy to help.

Handset and pendant did not work
The handset and the pendant didn't work at all. I tried all the troubleshooting procedures and the handset still said that the base had no power or was out of range. The pendant would not charge, apparently a defective battery, which is not something the customer can replace. The base phone itself was nice and easy to program, so it's too bad the rest of it didn't work. I sent an email to VTech requesting advice on solving the problems and they responded by saying they would replace the set in about 2 weeks if I shipped it to them with a copy of my receipt from Amazon for the purchase. I decided, however, that I did not want to risk getting another defective phone from this manufacturer, and therefore opted to return the whole thing for credit. By the way, my old phone was a Vtech with a cordless handset similar to this one that worked for about 5 years, so the problems with the new set were not due to outside interference or anything related to the house or its wiring. Furthermore, I went to a local electronics store and purchased an AT&T set like this one: http://www.amazon.com/AT-CL84102-Expandable-Cordless-Answering/dp/B007B5VGFA/ except with an extra handset instead of a pendant. It's very similar to the VTech model. The AT&T base and cordless handsets worked immediately as they were supposed to.

Pendant is wonderful
I absolutely love this phone, especially the pendant. It is so convenient to be able to go about the house with the pendant around my neck and answer the phone with the touch of a button. No struggling with a handset or finding the cordless undercharged. It also gives that extra feeling of security because you can dial two preset numbers with the touch of a button should an emergency arise when you are not near the phone. Entire set works well. Great answering machine and cordless handset also. Great buy for the money. Saw the same set at a competitor for a higher price and it didn't include the cordless handset. I would definitely recommend this set. It would be especially helpful for the elderly or disabled who can't afford the monthly fee for an emergency pendant.
