Rather than use the old plug in timer I looked for an electronic timer and came across the Nicrew one. I didn't want anything fancy; just something to turn the light on gradually and off again. It's a simple job to plug this into the lead of the existing light, turn it on, set the time and the on/off functions and away you go. One word of caution; make sure your light has a connector in it's lead compatible with the Nicrew connector. This would not have fitted one of my Fluval lights. Be aware that if the power to the Nicrew timer is cut you will need to reset the time when you turn it back on but it does retain any settings you have entered.
