The varnished plywood surround is much nicer than the usual coloured plastic surrounds that one normally gets with this type of clock.It's also extremely legible, I can easily read it from the other end of my kitchen (which is over 20 feet away). Lastly, it keeps good time. It gains 2 seconds every 5 days, which is slightly better than the 15 seconds a month that one expects from a decent 'affordable' Japanese quartz watch, so, I'm quite pleased with that, and given that watch and clock movements tend to slow down with age I expect it will become even more accurate as time passes. Fitting the battery was easy to do but there are two plastic fittings loose in the box & their purpose remains a mystery. The clock itself appears to keep good time & is silent.
