Review: Great, simple combination deadbolt - I replaced one of the "digital" style locks on our rehearsal studio door with this. The old lock had teeny tiny plastic gears that had to move the deadbolt for you, after you entered the code. Boooo. Hell on the batteries, and the weatherstripping insulation, which, installed right, pushes gently on the door to create a seal, was too much for that tiny little motor; in order to operate the lock, users had to pull the door fully shut. Well, after about 20 failures of the old lock, I searched this one out, and couldn't be happier. The only thing the code does is release the deadbolt, which you then simply turn with your own hand. This is not a "digital" lock - no remote control or monitoring, no network, nothing fancy. It's truly the replacement for a key in a deadbolt, except you don't need to give out copies of the key, AND you can change the "key" (ie code) in like 2 minutes. Install was fairly quick - I'd say 15-20 minutes. A little bit fussy, but no problems if you read carefully. The only thing I struggled with at all was swapping the larger plate that came on the deadbolt with the in-line version (which came with, but not pre-installed); it took more force than I expected, and I was worried I might break something. Also - I love the fact that you need a code to open it, but you can lock it by simply pressing the "Schlage" button when you're leaving. Who needs a code to lock a door? Plus, when you do lock, there's a nice 3-5 second window when you can be like "oh, shoot, I left my XXX inside" and you can unlock again. All in all - a very practical, viable lock. Here's hoping it lasts!
Review: Perfect. Simple. Not a "smart" lock, but a smart design. - We needed a lock on the entry door in our garage that didn't need a key. We like to lock the door when we leave but it's a pain to pull a key out of your pocket when you have two kids pulling on you or one on you. It's the same when you enter the house. We also have a cleaning crew that comes when we're not there, so we usually have to lease that door unlocked and let them through the garage. At first I was going to go with a smart lock that had some more features, but every one I looked at seemed to have one glaring problem (battery life, easy to break in, connection issues, etc.) And they're not cheap. This thing fit the bill (nothing more, nothing less), and at a good price. Easy to use, program, install, and the 9V battery should last up to 3 years before you need to replace it. The only thing I didn't realize is that I'd have to drill a bigger hole because the existing door wasn't bored at 2-1/8". If you have a drill, all you need is the DEWALT D180004 Bi-Metal Door Lock Installation Kit ($25). And make sure to to pre-drill holes for the long screws that go into the reinforced latch plate (I learned the hard way that those screws will strip). Anyway, this thing has been great. Super easy to lock and unlock without a key (and if you need a key, it comes with two - I just put them in a key-lock in the garage in case I need one).

## Questions & Answers

**Q: does this lock have an autolock feature?**
A: You have to turn it manually, which is the main reason I bought this unit. In my experience, similar units that "auto-lock" are problematic in that the "bolt" may not set correctly if not perfectly lined up. On our door, we had problems with humidity and the "auto" feature would jam unless you "jiggled" the door. Also, the "auto" lock units eat up the battery much faster.

**Q: Do the numbers wear on the commonly used keys (for your PIN entry?) That is, after repeated use, can a person tell which keys are pressed most often?**
A: ...even if one could identify the 4 most commonly used keys, there would still be 256 potential combinations since numbers can be repeated. I have had one of these for six years, and while the numbers have not worn, the buttons which are pushed most frequently are a bit dirtier than the numbers that never get pushed. They are not dirty but there is slight discoloration. However, since my wife and family each have separate codes, 8 out of the 10 buttons get used at some point. All that said, the keys are still clean and the oft used button are only barely discolored.

**Q: Is the keypad visible in the dark -- from a source other than reflected light?**
A: No, The Keyboard is not visible in the dark. You must touch a key on the pad before the keyboard lights. We press any key an then press the enter key before we enter a code.

**Q: read where rain can "fry" this unit, true???**
A: I have two of these and one of the touchpad deadbolts on different doors. The two like this have been installed about 2 years and the touchpad has been installed about three. One of them (this model) is installed on a shed directly in the elements while the other two have eves above them (very small overhangs). I am currently replacing the one that is directly in the elements while the other two are still functioning perfectly.

The overhangs are small but it is the difference between getting soaked EVERY single time it rains and rarely ever getting directly rained on. So I would say, no, rain doesn’t “fry” this product but, yes, DIRECT exposure to the elements will likely shorten the lifespan of the lock. On the other hand, it doesn’t take much to reduce this problem (like a 12” overhang 8-10’ above the door). Also, the “shortened” lifespan of mine was still about two years. It was better than I expected knowing it was completely unsheltered.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Emergency access key feature of this coded locking system!
*by M***Y on January 2, 2026*

We bought this lock so if emergency personnel need access to the house, we can relay a code to them without having to be physically present. The lock is sturdy and it's bright brass finish matched our existing hardware. The code setting process was clearly explained in the instruction sheet and was easily completed.
