I spend every chance I get under the stars taking in the amazing views that can be seen from my 10" Meade LXD-55 Schmidt Newtonian. With my background in photography, it should come as no surprise that I have shifted more into astrophotography than visual observing. My imaging sessions are usually conducted with two of my best friends at a private observatory owned by one of them . The observatory is nice but it is located about 35-40 minutes from me and thus I do not get out there as much as I would like to. So over the last couple of months I have been gearing up my scope for imaging. One of the first task I had to tackle was building a cable that would allow me to control my telescope from my PC, and that is what today's tutorial is all about.There are several reasons one would want to control their telescope with a PC: It is faster than using the hand controller. It gives you a visual aid when searching for something hard to find. If you find something unknown, the planetarium software will be able to identify it. It is a necessity if you plan on imaging anything for longer than a single quick exposure. It's wicked cool!Building the cable is quite simple and only requires soldering 3 joints and placing 3 wires into a RJ10 plug and crimping the punch downs to secure the cable. The schematic below is what we will be following. I found this diagram online several months ago and do not remember where I found it. If it is yours, please contact me so I can add attribution. I had the GPS rollover issue with my Meade LX200 GPS mount--it reverted to 2003 and picked alignment stars that were well below the horizon. I needed to upgrade to the latest software update and did not have the official Meade USB to serial to RS232 cabling, and didn't want to spend the money for them. I tried some USB to serial adapters that I had lying around with my Windows 10 Pro laptop and none of them recognized the mount. While looking for other adapters, I stumbled on this one claiming to be for Meade for about one quarter the price of the official ones. Plus, it went from USB directly to the RJ11 style cable that the mount uses, without a serial plug in between. Some reviewers said that this cable would require downloading a pretty common driver, but in my case it was not necessary. I plugged it in and it discovered the mount immediately, no driver required. I'm not a computer wizard, but am guessing that Windows 10 may already have the driver. Worked perfectly with my computer and mount. It's rare that something works as it should. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Appears to be good quality product, but didn't work on my older Meade controller *by M***H on Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2022* Plugged this into my telescope and tried to download/update my software - no luck. Meade controller "use Autostar ETX with this model" but I've been unable to reboot or restart the controller (it is locked on this screen). I noticed the USB plug got very hot when I first plugged it into my laptop, but it eventually cooled off. Downloaded Meade software from multiple websites with no luck, may try another laptop. Purchased this telescope at Goodwill recently, I believe it is from 2001. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Worked like a charm *by W***. on Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2022* The cable was exactly what I needed. Once the suggested driver was installed the cable was immediately identified.
