The USB port allows you to connect to your computer for midi sequencing inside your digital audio workstation software. There are five memory locations to store your own drum kits for the internal kits and midi kits. The drum sounds have cross switching for soft and hard hits on the pads which adds a nice dynamic touch. You can play along with the 100 built in songs and mute the kit performances in each song with the "Drum Off" button, also you can practice and control the volume of the accompaniment tracks. Or do I have to spend more on a better kit?** A: I haven't tried using it myself, but I will say yes, it will. However, if you want to improve on those skills by playing like Danny Carey, this unit will leave you equally disappointed and frustrated. The good news is that no matter what instrument you end up with, a Faustian deal with the devil will gain you rock stardom/immortality 100% of the time, even if you suck...case in point: Lars Ulrich. **Q: I'm an adult that is thinking about picking up the drums but I have almost no experience with them at all. Would this kit be a good place to start? How applicable would the progress I make be to a real drum set? Unfortunately, I live in an apartment and a real drum set isn't an option presently.** A: This is a great set. Sounds like my $1500 electronic drum set on my keyboard amp or headphones. You'll want to get really good headphones, but this is a great system to start on. I had to make a stand to anchor the foot pedals. And even then, the high hat and kicker don't fire every time. But I felt I got my money's worth. I've since upgraded to a Yamaha dtx-562. But that cost about ten times as much. Have fun! :-) **Q: does this kit come with sticks?** A: Yes it does come with a set of sticks **Q: Can i plug this into a recording program? such as presonus/studio one and be able to lay tracks?** A: Yes. Any product with a usb out and midi advertised allows you to connect and use it with any major recording program (DAW software) on the market today - generally most OS (Windows, Mac, Linux) these days will work out of the box without installing drivers. It will translate trigger and pressure response into midi signals and whatever drum kit or other instrument patch you wish to hook into in your software will be recognized with it. Just be aware that with most midi controllers you will be manually programming which pads correspond to which instrument notes in software - they often don't work out of the box perfectly without a good deal of tinkering to make each pad correspond to the specific drum you want.
