Kind of Similar to DC Mike's setup; I have a an old AMD PC that hosts my plex server (Athlon x2 4400+, 8gb DDR2, and Radeon HD 6870 *can't remember if video card helps with plex decoding at all, but it's there anyway and has no other use to me) I do have a couple TB worth of media on HDDs in that box but the majority of my data is on similar NAS devices like this buffalo Linkstation. Literally any USB external or NAS drive can host media for a Plex server with extremely little chance of limited performance. The limiting factor in Plex performance comes with the capability of the computer hosting the server to decode and encode media to play on the device you're trying to stream to (for instance, accessing your plex server from another pc takes much fewer resources than on your ipad would require because the server pc has to reencode the media to a format that iOS can utilize) and, in the case of remote streaming, your internet connection. The 10+ year old pc I described can stream multiple 1080p video remotely with no visible lag and I've tried as much as 7 local network 1080p streams and had not issue there.tl;dr - This can host all of your music, video, pictures for a plex server to access but not run the plex server itself. **Q: 3 questions: does it by default appear in windows 10 pro file manager? can the contents be encrypted? can i directly copy to the drive via usb?** A: 1 does it by default appear in windows 10 pro file manager? Not always. I have one that does and one that doesn't. You can set it up as a network drive. 2 The contents are not encrypted. This has to be done before storing them to the drive. # No, the drive can't be accessed by USB. The USB port is to add an additional drive to it. **Q: does this support time machine?** A: I'm having MAJOR problems with it. It's unreliable. It shows it's backup one day. I check a week later only to find it hasn't done a single back up since. Time Machine progress bar shows it being stuck. **Q: Can this be used as an iTunes home sharing server? (e.g. Stream to an apple TV. )** A: Yes ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Would purchase again…. *by on Reviewed in Canada June 17, 2026* Great External Drive….. the only “problem”, if one wishes to call it that, is the software used to access it: not the actual coding in the software, but rather, the instructions, or lack there of. Good thing that I was somewhat computer savvy, otherwise I could imagine the headaches & frustrations that a non techie person would experience. Good Server/Drive for your money. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very nice drive *by on Reviewed in the United States March 29, 2022* Had an issue with the first drive I received, it was not showing formatted, and would not allow access to format. It was replaced (Amazon) and the new drive works as advertised.A little learning curve to set up but help menu and support is very clear and helpful. ### ⭐ Noisy and dead slow *by on Reviewed in Saudi Arabia September 26, 2026* The moment any read or write, it's making a lot of noise. I used to hear such sound when hard disks are failed or about to.Speed is horrible, I ordered 710 as they advertised it's multiple times faster then their 210 model. When 710 it self this horrible how terrible 210 would have been.Is it this terrible or the one I got defective? ## Frequently Bought Together - BUFFALO LinkStation 710 8TB 1-Bay NAS Network Attached Storage with HDD Hard Drives Included NAS Storage That Works as Home Cloud or Network Storage Device for Home - NETGEAR 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Essentials Switch (GS305) - Home Network Hub, Office Ethernet Splitter, Plug-and-Play, Silent Operation, Desktop or Wall Mount --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.com.ar/products/725507524-buffalo-linkstation-710-8tb-1-bay-nas-network-attached-storage](https://www.desertcart.com.ar/products/725507524-buffalo-linkstation-710-8tb-1-bay-nas-network-attached-storage) --- *Product available on Desertcart Argentina* *Store origin: AR* *Last updated: 2026-11-04*
