Thankfully I didn't damage it. After giving myself a day off to physically recover from the effort, I tried again tonight - used a different technique (instead of trying to fold it, I tried rolling it). It repacked perfectly, multiple times. So now I'm ready to use it, and won't make a spectacle of myself trying to get it packed back up. It took me a minute to fold it back up only because I was a bit nervous about folding it wrong, but it literally just folded back into a circle and I put it back in the case. I 100% recommend this tent.
