Here’s what we did that was so effective: -place the unit in front of an open window so that it’s drawing air in from there and blowing it into the room -leave the room door open and if possible have a window on the opposite side of the house open to create a cross-current -run the unit an hour or preferable two or three before you want to go to bed to cool the room, then switch the device to fan mode overnight because the tank doesn’t hold enough water to run for more than four hours or so at a time You definitely want to live in a dry climate to use this, you’ll appreciate having that extra humidity. Yes, I have added ice to the water chamber. There is not an automatic shutoff so I am quite sure you would burn up the pump if you let it run dry. Also, you need to run the unit on fan only for at least 1/2 hour after usage to dry the membrane. Others have complained of their water smelling, but I’m sure it was the membrane from not being properly dried after use. I have mine plugged into a timer so that when I’m finished with it and turn it to fan only, it shuts off automatically after 1/2 hour. **Q: How do you install the casters? Past the tip there’s is a ring that prevents me from inserting them completely. What am I missing?** A: Place the wheels with the "brake" in the front of the unit. Tap with cloth-covered hammer or rubber mallet to set them into place. Hope that helps! **Q: How to open water door? The tab to pull on is too narrow to grasp.** A: You don't grasp the tab you push down on it with your thumb. The door will rotate out. **Q: How long will it run before the water runs out?** A: It depends a bit on the humidity, the lower the humidity in the air you are pulling in the faster water can evaporate. On hot dry 20ish % humidity days with the fan on high I get about 4 hours before the water level reaches the bottom of the water level window (but after this point it has maybe a gallon left in it, I assume to protect the pump from running dry). Even in May, we are already hovering around the 100° mark, and in the direct sun, that's just more hot than I want to deal with. I've had this 1300 CFM for less than a week, and I am already in love with it. This morning I was able to get some outside work done because I could sit down with the cool air to cool me down quickly. And the moisturized air feels so much better than AC air because it's so dry to begin with. There is no remote control, which is fine. The two fan speeds seem to be enough. There are actually 5 settings: high/low with water, high/low without water, and a water only setting to wet the pad before blowing air through. However, it doesn't take that long for the air to start pumping out cool air, so I think the water only setting isn't really necessary. The only assembly is attaching the wheels to the base. Easy peasy. The heavy-duty cord is a good length. A brass fitting is included for use with a water hose. The fill spout isn't huge, but it worked well with the hose. We have super hard water here, so I'm not sure what kind of extra maintenance that will require, and I hope the pad can be replaced...I am looking into that. There has been no water leakage. My only complaint is that I'm concerned about the plastic handle when it's full of water. I have needed to lift it across door entries with it filled, and I worry about the durability of the plastic handle with thecweight of the water. But the absolute best part is how cool and refreshing the air is. The 1300 CFM that I have will work just fine where it's being used, but I will get the larger one once the deck is finished because it truly is refreshing to have the moisturized air out here in the Arizona desert.
