All solid metal. The foot works on my concrete floors. It holds a solid wood door that is about 8 feet tall and 42 inches wide that has an automatic closure. Tips for installation: To ensure the stopper is installed at the right height, here are some tips. - Open the door to the position you intend on using the stopper the most. This ensures you account for different floor material/height. - Put the stopper in the stopping position (in the down position). - Put the stopper against the door and slide it down until the foot hits the floor. - Mark your holes. - But instead of drilling dead center to the mounting holes, drill about 1/16-1/8 BELOW the center of the hole. This ensures when the stopper comes down, it can get a good bite against the floor. Mine is used on a concrete floor. If you have carpet, depending on the thickness, just make sure to account for that. You might have to go a little farther down, but that depends on how much pressure you used earlier when you slid the stopper down into the carpet before you did the marking. Is this one long enough?** A: You will be 1/2 inch short. From the bottom of the mount (not the two mounting holes as they are further up from the bottom of the mount by about 1/4 inch) to the bottom of the rubber tip is 3 inches when extended so the tip is flat with the floor. Even if you mounted the stop at the very bottom of the door you would be 1/2 inch short. **Q: Does it come with screws for attaching it to the door? If so, are they wood screws?** A: it come with screws that match the finish of the door stop. They are wood screws but they will work on metal doors also. **Q: I have one similar to this, and it became loose over time, to where it doesn't stay in the up position. Can this be repaired?** A: Cheap enough to replace not repair. Mine doesn't look like it can be repaired but it still works great,even after a year or so. **Q: could this item be used as a security method, from an intruder kicking in the door?** A: My opinion (based on substantial security planning experience) is that it would slow down someone trying to force the door but would not stop a forced entry. The part of the doorstop in contact with the floor is only rubber or plastic and would not last long against forced entry.
