Review: A Useful Desk Lamp But With Some Drawbacks - I was looking for a more modern replacement for my aging circular fluorescent desk magnifier lamp, especially as the hinges were becoming increasingly loose and failing to hold the lamp in the desired position. This lamp caught my attention as it had two fixing methods, a weighted base or a table clip, and its flexible neck seemed like an excellent alternative to the 'anglepoise' type of my existing lamp. When it arrived it required a small amount of assembly; the magnifying lens was separate and needed inserting into the lamp and locking in place. This was the first drawback - the retaining ring did not fit very well and indeed on first assembly the lens fell out! Fortunately it landed on a soft surface so no damage was done, but the manufacturer needs to attend to the poor fitting of this important item. Only after reworking the retaining ring's latching segments with a needle file was I finally able to get it to hold the lens securely in place. The second drawback is the length of the neck, for most tables, and mine is about 2m wide by 0.6m deep, it is too short to fully cover the whole surface. If attached at the back of the table, it won't reach the front, if attached along the side it will not reach the other side. On the positive side it is a bright low-voltage lamp that provides plenty of illumination, and in this regard is a distinct improvement in terms of power consumption. You do have to be careful not to pull the power plug out, and I would have liked a more positive retention for this plug.
