This sealed her position as an auteur in the studio and musical genius.Hounds of Love has the classic hits - RUTH, Cloudbusting, Hounds of Love. Songs of love and understanding. The Ninth Wave is where Kate comes into her own. A suite of songs built around the thoughts of a women washed overboard from a shipwreck in the North Sea. Her struggles in and out of consciousness and how the most terrifying thing she has to overcome is the darkness of her imagination. And Dream of Sleep has her wishing for a quick death....A witch trial, Waking the Witch, reveals that she dreams that this is some sort of punishment for being bad and that drowning is inevitable.The fact Kate was in her mid twenties when she wrote this never ceases to amaze me. She sings about her future self visiting her to boost her motivation to stay alive in Jig of Life and Hello Earth is imagining looking at herself from above the earth and desperately trying to get some perspective on her terrible misfortune. These are such mature themes that Kate explores in her music and the rescue in The Morning Fog is full of relief and admiration for our heroine for overcoming her darkest fears in her imagination.The musical style is also very interesting and original. There is used traditional Irish music and also the use of a male voice choir which is utterly haunting. You will never forget this when you have heard this album. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ but this is a fantastic album, especially the "2nd side" the Ninth Wave" *by M***N on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 September 2017* Wow wow wow wow wow. I bought this as my daughter is a huge fan and I have never really been, but this is a fantastic album,especially the "2nd side" the Ninth Wave". Really quite spiritually uplifting,brave and advanced for its time. Very impressive indeed.Could have done without the 12" versions of the previous songs at the end of the disc but some of the other extras are great. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Musical Genius *by D***M on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 November 2012* I'm buying this, as I used to have it on LP and then I think CD. Time to upgrade. Deal with God (what she calls running up that hill, she couldn't call it that or it would have been banned from most of American radio) is well known to anyone who's alive and Cloud bursting was popular with an excellent video with Donald Sutherland. The title track Hounds of Love and The Big Sky were also accessible. Now that it's not on LP "The Ninth Wave" which was the title of side two, is less easy to distinguish than originally designed, but no less wonderful for it. If you've only heard Kate Bush "hits" this 'side' is less accessible, but worth the listen. Her genius lies in the wonderful drama of songs like Deal with God, but also the seven songs woven together to form "The Ninth Wave". If you're not heard anything other than the hits, this is a good place to start, and then work back to Never for Ever, The Dreaming, The Kick Inside.
