They require screwed in side support to carry any weight. Without this the self supporting mechanism sags even with only bed linens and towels on separate shelves. The instructions were clear and the shelf was easy to install in just a few minutes from opening the package. It really does the job I wanted it to do and I have rescued all my T shirts from ,the heap' to store on the shelf. They are of course not heavy so I have no idea what weight the shelf could take but it seems secure enough.
