This film was released in 1988 and you can’t help drawing parallels to today’s Tesla cars. It’s stunning that in the background of a couple of scenes there is a poster of Mr. Tesla. Maybe this movie was some inspiration for Elon and company or maybe the director (FFC) was just that good of a genius to put the Tesla reference in. A spectacular performance by Martin Landau who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor (and should have won btw though Kevin Kline was good in A Fish Called Wanda, I just think Landau was phenomenal). The music score is a little overbearing and a little carnivalesque and I think that detracts from the technical and personal aspects of the story. There’s a serious side to the story and it’s hard to let it sink in with all the P. T. Barnum themed scenes. Still, it’s a good movie and worth having in the collection. I’ve seen a Tucker automobile in person and they are impressive. To bad they didn’t have enough time to get everything sorted out before they were shafted. Review: Marvelous movie, timely subject, clumsy title - If there is still any question about how GM and Chrysler wound up on the rocks in 2008, the story of Preston Tucker and his dream car offers a very good answer. It gives me great satisfaction, not only that history has given the Big Three its final kick in the pants but also that it seems to have spared a good number of these gorgeous cars. Too bad the auto bosses who brought him down didn't live to see the end of the story. Nobody I know has ever heard of this film, and that's too bad. Preston Tucker is an important figure in the history of American entrepreneurship, and his story is certainly timely, even if this film were only marginally accurate. The pedestrian title may turn off potential viewers who think it's one of those educational documentaries shown in high school classrooms. Re-release it under a jazzier title, such as "The Car of the Century", and it might make a comeback. It's relevant for anyone who drives or rides in a car.
