Just over 24 hours later I suddenly and unexpectedly got a message saying that I'd disconnected the drive without closing it properly (I hadn't) and since then it's been a brick with lights that makes a sad whirring noise when I try to connect it. I've tried it on two different laptops using both the USB-A and USB-C cables but the most I can get is for Disk Utility to see it as an unmounted object which can't be erased or reformatted.
