So happy! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Treason and heroism in the struggle to save humanity *by I***S on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 January 2024* This is the seventh novel I have read in the Halo series and it takes place about a year after the action of the fifth novel, Halo: Contact Harvest, which saw first contact with the dastardly Covenant and the fall of the first human colony on the planet Harvest. That means it takes place some years before the sixth novel, Halo: The Cole Protocol, which I read a couple of months ago. I’ve now given up trying to read the Halo novels in chronological order. The series seems to be multiplying. Twenty novels and short story collections are listed on the inside cover of this edition but more are appearing by the day.Like Contact Harvest and The Cole Protocol, this volume adds more layers to the Halo universe. The theme of treachery (or freedom fighting) on the human side continues. We have traitors deeply embedded in the UN navy and desperately trying to eliminate John-117 and the other Spartans. The rationale for this is that the Spartans were designed to suppress the Insurrectionists rather than to save humanity from the Covenant. The fact that they can potentially do both is a good enough reason for the Insurrectionists to want to sabotage Spartan missions against the Covenant and take them out of the game. We have other traitors, representatives of worlds threatened by Armageddon from the Covenant, naively thinking they can do a deal with the aliens that would rid them of UN colonial rule and protect them from the aliens’ passion for destroying humanity. One hothead even talks about giving the Covenant forces Earth’s location so they can zap tens of billions of their oppressors. A more sensible traitor suggests holding that bit of intelligence back until the aliens have proved that they can be trusted. Thus their initial offer is to give the aliens intelligence about the Spartans and their plans to disrupt Covenant supply lines.Of course the aliens negotiating with the traitors regard them as nothing more than useful idiots who will be zapped in the fulness of time. But there is also conflict on the Covenant side. This includes contempt and suspicion between the various species that make up the Covenant hierarchy and disagreement about strategy and tactics. The Spartans and other UN military units are able to exploit this conflict to carry out some spectacular sabotage missions, despite being stabbed in the back by the traitors in their midst.This novel has plenty of combat but also more plot and character development than some of the earlier novels. It is written by Troy Denning, who has written a couple of other Halo novels. I’d recommend it to anyone who plays Halo, or anyone who likes a bit of sci-fi escapism, but it’s best to try to read the Halo novels in some kind of correct order (whatever that is), otherwise you’re liable to end up lost in a parallel universe. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 out of 5 stars Decent *by M***E on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 May 2022* Is a fair novel.
