To insert the two batteries, as per all children's toys that take batteries, there is a screw to access the battery compartment. This sits on top of the main engine. When unscrewed, lift the top off the engine to access the battery compartment. There is no screwdriver supplied as is the norm. As a mother of five and a grandmother of three, I've bought a lot of toys in my time, and I've never once has a screwdriver supplied to access the battery compartment. However, every household has a set of screwdrivers, so this shouldn't be an issue. There is a light on the front of the train but as you can see (hear) in the attached video, there are no sound effects. Quality wise, it is as expected for the price point. It does run a tad too fast I think as it does have a tendency to derail. One needs to just simply pop it back on the track again, but I suspect I child might get a little frustrated with the derailing. In short, it's not bad if one needs a gift and cash is a bit tight. However, don't have too high expectations and don't expect too much.
