So far the battery is everything I expected - strong and consistent with a nice reserve capacity. If anything changes I will update this review but so far so good. I came home and found the battery lying NEXT the box it was shipped in on it's side, and the box had simply "busted" at both the top and bottom. The UPS guy did not even make an effort to put it back, and I don't blame him as it's not his job. Why the shipper used a paper-thin box with only one strip of tape, I cannot understand. I know for a fact when you order an Optima from the factory it comes in a very thick cardboard box with strong tape. This was the opposite - a box meant for shipping teddy bears not heavy batteries. My current battery is close to the end of it's service life, but that may be another year or ? My neighbor will let me know how long the old battery lasts in his spare truck. My current wet house battery requires maintenance.** A: You have to use a "modern" charger that has a "gel battery" selection. I had to buy a new charger to make my gel batteries charge after too much discharge. I think that the gel battery requires a different program that deals with how the charge is taken up in the gel/electrode system rather than the wet electrode system. As I recall, the Optima website has some information on charging gel batteries. **Q: is this a good marine battery** A: I would say yes. It's all position and sealed. It's amazingly stron and holds a charge extremely well. I used this battery to replace an almost new Toyata battery in a Landcruser. The ca only gets driven once or twice a week. The Toyota battery did not hold a charge well. This yellow top shows me over 1000 cold cranking amps. The Toyota just 500. This is on par with a diesel starting battery.I have a boat with Volvo Diesel engines. I use two 27F marine deep cycle batteries for each other nine. It finally started to have trouble holding a charge about a year ago, so I added a trickle charger (battery minder) hard wired into the tractor - and that worked until today. Today, I had trouble getting the tractor to crank, and trouble getting the battery to take a charge. So I put it on a battery booster for about 20 minutes. I got back on the tractor and turned the key and BLAM!!!. The battery exploded and blew the top off in many pieces. But I didn't notice any acid and nobody got hurt. The top blew apart, but the sides remained intact. So my advice is to buy this battery and enjoy many years of reliable operation. But after 10 years - pitch it and get another. Don't go through nutrolls trying to get even more years out of it.
