This remarkable one man play is a tour de force which brilliantly interweaves Dickens' turbulent life story with some of his most memorable fictional characters brought to life by Simon Callow's breathtaking performance in this classic interpretation of the life of Dickens. Review "His (Callow's) portrayal of Mrs Gamp, Uriah Heep and Bill Sykes' murder of Nancy are splendid, and you leave Patrick Garland's fine production and Callow's full blooded performance marvelling afresh at Dickens's wonderful way with words, character and narrative." --The Daily Telegraph

"Callow gives the story terrific wellie, conjuring up the cast of comic and gross characters---in Patrick Garland's brilliant production." "At once you feel that he is akin to Dickens, above all in the force with which he claims the stage, the audience, life itself." "The Mystery of Charles Dickens - the work of the renowned Dickens biographer Peter Ackroyd - takes us to the core essence of the Dickens enigma." --Financial Times

"Dickens was a man possessed with a gloriously theatrical imagination to which Callow's magnificent performance does full justice." --The Mail on Sunday

I wish I could have seen this live but am so grateful that it has been saved for posterity on this DVD. I used to love Simon Callow's Dickens at Christmas one man shows on the BBC and was annoyed when they were discontinued. This DVD is such a treat to have, so that I can watch his mesmerising portrayal of Dickens and so many of his characters when ever I want. The way he switches from one character to another without a blink of an eye is sheer acting genius. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Simon Callow *by J***E on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 January 2013* What a great actor this man is! I loved this dvd - he becomes so animated at times that my grandson in a room at the far end of the house heard him shouting and came out to see if all was well! It was only Simon Callow giving his all to Dickens! Brings it all to life. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I ordered it for the lady friend and she is very happy with it indeed *by M***H on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 August 2017* Once more, I ordered it for the lady friend and she is very happy with it indeed. --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.com.ar/products/62990145-the-mystery-of-charles-dickens](https://www.desertcart.com.ar/products/62990145-the-mystery-of-charles-dickens) --- *Product available on Desertcart Argentina* *Store origin: AR* *Last updated: 2026-10-01*
