Occasionally it would turn on, confirming I had wired it correctly, but it wasn't remotely reliable. The theme of the set was magic house (a Harry Potter / Hogwarts knockoff), so I told her I would fix it with magic. I ordered these. I broke the first two as I tried to get it into position, but the third one worked great. I buried a tiny neodymium magnet inside the bristles of a TINY broom and now when she moves it to a particular corner of the room the lights turn on. The reed in these switches have to be sensitive enough to move from the field from the little ~1/8" magnet through 1/8" of plywood and a little additional gap from the placement inside the broom.
