The Bivy Stick is intended to be used as a safety assistance device, not as a mobile internet device.

**Q: Do you need a smartphone for this to operate?**
A: Yes and No. You need a smartphone for activation, typing custom messages, and changing settings. The Bivy Stick can be used as a standalone on occasions if you don't want to bring your smartphone or keep it in your backpack. The standalone functions are: 

1. Tracking (Hold the check-in button for 5 seconds. The custom intervals are set via smartphone and Bivy app.
2. Check-in Messages. Always free and unlimited. Set you custom check-in message in the app. 
3. SOS. There is a button under flap on bottom of device. You must create an SOS profile when activating the Bivy Stick. 

It's recommended to always use a smartphone with the Bivy Stick, so you can communicate with Global Rescue in case of an emergency.
