I washed it with a combination of olive oil and dish soap, then dried them laying flat on a towel and the smell was gone.I've had these for a few months now and have been using them regularly. However, the larger brush is slowly loosing its hairs, I'm suspecting the quality because I handle my brushes very carefully. When you open the case you will immediately notice a VERY strong chemical smell. The smell decreased after washing, but it is still there. I think this would be a good starter set if you are new to make-up, or if you want an extra set of brushes for travel, the office etc... But I do think there are better quality brushes on Amazon for a comparable price. All the eyeshadow brushes are pretty dense and firm. The set would have been better if they had included one fluffy, dome type eye brush.
