The lining is soft, no need to wear anything underneath. The only issue I have with these and why I didn't give it 5 stars is: The button on the waist is inside, it's tricky enough at home in the warm and dry. I wouldn't want to deal with the button with cold wet hands. Whilst it isn't often that you need to remove your trousers whilst out it can happen. It has the button and a press stud. You need to do both up, I found the stud pops undone easily without the button done up. Whilst I'm not the slimmest person 36" waist is not massive! It may not be a problem on slimmer people.On a more positive note these really are comfortable, they do not make your legs sweaty like the plastic 'over trousers' available. I'm pleased with them, warm, keep you dry with a nice fit. ### ⭐ 1.0 out of 5 stars far too small *by A***Y on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 November 2017* ordered these through amazon from Outdoor gear UK. Ordered a 36" waist as all my other Craghoppers trousers are 36" waist but these are ridiculously small or I have put on a lot of weight since this morning! If you decide, I would recommend you order at least one if not 2 sizes bigger than normal.
