Nevertheless, as a "Vine reviewer," who received these without direct cost (not NO cost, mind you, as I have to pay income tax on the "fair market value" as if it was regular income) and I'm expected to provide a fair, thorough, and honest review for the products I receive in this program.So, let me start off by saying that I HAVE used fire blankets previously, in the military, but never in civilian life. Smothering a fire by putting "fire blanket" on top of it is an effective way to reduce oxygen flow and put it out, and "fire blankets" can also be used to partially protect yourself if caught in a fire. This particular blanket design is relatively small... 40" x 40", or just a bit over 3 feet square... so it's not great for personal protection, but it IS well-suited for putting out small fires inside the home, such as stove-top fires.I got the 4-pack of them, and have placed one in each of my cars, in case of interior fire, plus two in my home (one in the kitchen, and one in the utility closet). These are the most likely locations for fires in the home to begin, and I wanted them to be immediately available. The vehicle-located ones are more likely to come in handy at locations like campgrounds or the like, but could be helpful in extinguishing an electrical fire in the passenger compartment (say, from a heated seat element, for example).They are inside of heavy plastic pouches, with a hole suitable for hanging from a nail or wall hook at the top. The bottom flap is secured with velcro tape with is affixed to the package as well as the blanket. This works very well to QUICKLY remove the blanket from the pouch in case of emergency. I tried this out. (Repacking it after testing that out was more of a challenge, but it's possible with a little patience!)Note, this type of fire blanket is really intended as a one-time-use item. Generally speaking, you would never remove it from the packaging unless you need it, and after being used to smother a fire, you'll replace it rather than attempting to recondition and re-use it. It SAYS it's re-usable, but I personally would not want to try that, as being used will "foul" it with the combustion products from whatever fire you were putting out. And getting it back in the pouch is... challenging... even if not used.So, what's the advantage of this over a fire extinguisher? WELL... first off, this never expires, never loses pressure... it's HIGHLY RELIABLE. Fire extinguishers CAN fail, and if it happens to be failed at the moment you need to use it, that's going to be a big problem for you. So, having fire blankets is a great idea as a back up for regular fire extinguishers or sprinkler systems.It also doesn't create the mess that either water-based sprinkler systems or chemical fire extinguishers do. Years ago, my then-girlfriend was trying to make candles in my kitchen and dumped melted wax on the hot stovetop (a gas stovetop). It caught fire and... well, it was impressive! I ended up using my chemical fire extinguisher to put that out... lost hair on my arms in the process, trying to turn the stovetop valves off... and filled my home with this noxious yellow powder which I was still finding on things six months later, despite heavy cleaning.In that circumstance, this blanket would have been a perfect solution, creating no additional mess (no nasty yellow dust everywhere), would have put the fire out almost immediately, and would just have been a better solution all around.So, I would encourage EVERYONE to keep both a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket in, at the very least, their home's kitchen... and to try to use the blanket FIRST, and resort to the extinguisher only if the blanket fails to do the job.I'm giving this a full five-star rating, for now, based upon what I can determine about these blankets up-front, without ever using them. They SEEM like they'd be perfect for my needs. And God willing, I'll never have cause to learn whether my impression is accurate.If I were ever to try them out in reality and they were to fail... and my home were to be destroyed, or a barbeque grill were to become the source of an outdoor fire... I'd have to revise my rating.
