When I was planning a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, I was skeptical of a bag at this price point. I figured at this price point that I could give it a shot and worst case scenario I'd have to upgrade later. I knew that if I got this pack to Katadin, it would be the greatest deal ever.I didn't make it all the way, but I did hike ~1500 miles of the Appalachian Trail over 6 months. Not bad. The zipper in the hip belt broke loose at about 600 miles, but I was overstuffing the pocket and the bag in general at first. I liked it so much I bought it again. The original one still had some legs, but I liked the hip pocket for my phone and a new one was only $23! I was pretty lightweight (about 12lb base weight) and I wouldn't recommend more than that plus 4 days food. You have to be as close to ultra light weight (10lbs or less base weight) as possible to have a structureless backpack. That will be true whether you have a $23 backpack or a fancy $300 cuben fiber backpack.My setup changed overtime, but at the end I packed first aid and electronics and miscellaneous in the top zipper pocket. I packed my sleeping bag, extra clothes, tent, and food in the main compartment. I put my stove and canister in one of the water bottle pockets. I put a water bottle in the other pocket. It could be a little hard to reach, so I usually just refilled my gatorade bottle I had jerryrigged to the chest strap. I put my phone in one of the hip pockets and whatever convenience I wanted in the other. The bungee was really useful. I put my tent stakes and fork inside my reflectix pouch and strapped it to the outside as well as my rain poncho.I still have both backpacks I bought and use them for groceries (I'm in a city w/o a car ATM). I can't believe they had to add purple AFTER my hike. Purple is my favorite color! The green and blue looked good too. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great for sub week trips or large day pack. *by K***P on Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2016* I bought this bag for a packable daypack for traveling, and also used it on a week long trip to Europe as my main bag. I needed a practically sized bag smaller than my normal backpacking bags. Other reviewers have already posted several sets of photos, so I'll stick to what made this a great bag for the size.Pros:- At 40L, it's an ok size, and easily carried a weeks worth of fall clothes.- It's a good size for me, as a 5'5" female, but would most likely be too small for anyone much taller than me.- The pulls cords to tighten everything, and I cinched a small pillow to the outside while traveling.- It's made out of a study material, and came out from being checked as luggage spotless.- The side pockets easily fit a rolled up sweatshirt for easy access or a 1 L water bottle.Cons:- Un-padded straps. I'm an outdoors person, and while this would make an OK daypack, I'd be worried about loading with any real weight for a hike. The straps are unpadded, and dig in a bit when fully loaded.- The pack is designed for a man. The waist strap fit great, but the chest strap was impractically placed for a woman and didn't extend enough to clip for me.- The bag is top load only.- There is no support in the back of the bag (due to it being packable), so you need to be careful on how it gets packed.In the end, it's been a great bag for what I need it and use it for. I've found it quickly replacing some of my more expensive packs in the gear closet due to how light it is. Unlike many other reviews here, I did pay full price for this item, but am fully satisfied with the pack for what it is and what I spent on it. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Amazing as is, improvising makes better! *by E***V on Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2017* Update:have used this for multiple trips and so far so good. I’ve lowered my base weight to around 10 pounds and this has held up good. I wouldn’t recommend packing heavy as the shoulder straps are light in padding. If you know how to pack light this will be good. I recommend this for overnight/weekend trips as I have done.Original:Used it for one overnight trip so far and this is great!!!!! I am into ultra lightweight backpacking and this fits the bill. Put in a makeshift frame in the sleeve inside to add some rigidity to it. Really light and the material so far looks amazingly durable. I used this to hammock camp and was able to fit everything I needed. Of course I put some of my gear attached outside. Strapped a car windshield reflector, sleeping pad, hammock, and hammock tarp on the stretchy cord on the outside. Those held up fine and I had no worry of them falling. Inside in the main compartment I was able to fit an ultra compact sleeping bag, fleece sleeping bag, lots of extra clothes for the night, and my cook system. In the pocket that the backpack folds into I fit all my first aid/miscellaneous gear. In the top pocket of the pack was where all my food/food bowl fit. In the side pockets I was able to fit two 1.5 liter water bottles and had no fear of them falling out. Also loved the hip belt pockets was able to fit a good amount of snacks for quick reach while hiking. Now the hip belt... I think it's awesome. This was the reason I picked this bag over others at this weight/price range. The waist strap not only prevented the pack from moving around but was a perfect fit for me and helped transfer the weight onto my hips instead of back. This is great as it means my shoulders and back don't bear the weight. I'm 5'11" I know you might need your torso height but I don't know mine lol. At the end of the day this is a great ultralight backpack that you can modify to fit your needs I estimate that in my situation and improvising I can make this work for up to maybe a 3 night hike.
