Review: Opened the packet and I did in fact smell vanilla. It didn't smell like cookies were baking in the oven or anything because that's a different/combined smell. If this makes sense, it smelled like vanilla tastes, mild. So, I put some in my cocoa. I think it was probably the equivalent of a 1/4 teaspoon. I was mixing it in while the water was still very hot (too hot to drink yet). I got a very nice mild vanilla aroma, and the drink was flavored very nicely with a mild vanilla as well. Obviously when you get to the bottom it's there with the dregs though not harmful to ingest or anything. I made a second cup in the same cup with it still there and that had a lesser vanilla flavor as well; I would probably add just a tiny bit more if I do that in the future. Is that accurate? I'd like to use this in recipes, but I'd prefer it to dissolve.** A: I haven't tried dissolving this vanilla bean powder in water. I use it mostly in smoothies with other powdered ingredients. I mix all the powdered ingredients together well with just a spoon before adding liquid. Then I add just a small amount of liquid, enough to cover or a little more, and stir again well. Finally I add the rest of the liquid and stir once more. Used this way the vanilla dissolves fine. Also, used in baking there is no problem that I've found. **Q: other than the listed natural sugar content, is there any added sugar or other sweetener in this?** A: I don't believe that there is any other sugar added (other than what is naturally occurring in the beans). If there were sugar added, it would be included in the ingredients list (only the vanilla beans are listed). I tried browsing the Internet for "raw vanilla beans" to find out the natural sugar content but couldn't find reliable information for this. Doesn't sound like anything else is added....In buying this product for myself, I wanted organic vanilla beans and very low sugar. The sugar content on the package is listed at 0.5 g sugar. This low amount has worked well. When making homemade bakery products, I don't worry about the sugar content of the vanilla beans and just adjust the suggested amount of sugar in a recipe to what suits my needs--I add way LESS sugar than what is suggested! Considering the level of labor and technique requied to get the beans into a powder form it's minimal cost in comparison. The cost of this product is worth it in my opinion and I buy it every few months. You can always buy the pods whole then dry them out then make it into powder . I add a tsp of this vanilla to just about every shake combination I make, along with a good quality unflavored whey protein (I prefer undenatured, cold processed and grass fed). This vanilla tastes very good and way better than using a vanilla extract, and doesn't contain any extra stuff like glycerin or alcohol. And i'ts way more convenient than buying vanilla pods and preparing them each time.
