When I first received it, I didn't play with it too much initially. I had used it to access some data on disks since my laptop and my work laptop didn't have their own drives. When I finally got around to using it to attempt to play or rip dvds and blurays, it was somewhat noisy when playing or reading a dvd and some dvds didn't work at all. Blurays didn't read at all either. I tried a few things myself after doing some research including changing the location code (it was a 2 and being in the US I needed it to be 1). I finally contacted support via email and they responded within 24 hours. After going back and forth with them for about a week trying various other things and answering questions, they decided it was time to send me a new drive. It got to me within a couple days and has worked perfectly and been far quieter. I don't know what their rate of defects are but after the quick response and replacement, I would buy another one knowing that if I had any problems, it would be taken care of appropriately.
