Dysprosium is one the 14 rare earth metals (precious metals) Dysprosium is a silvery- white metallic rare-earth metal.  The name Dysprosium comes from the Greek word (dysprositos), which means “difficult to get at”.  One of the lanthanides.  Fairly stable at room temperature, and quickly dissolves by dilute and concentrated mineral acids to produce hydrogen.  It only takes small amounts of impurities to affect the metal’s physical properties, but it is generally soft enough to be cut with a knife.  While there is not currently a wide range of applications for dysprosium, properties such as its thermal neutron absorption cross-section and high melting point could result in metallurgical uses in nuclear control applications and for alloying with special stainless steels. Isolation of the rare earth elements from each other has been difficult and expensive because their chemical properties are so similar. Metallic Dysprosium dust presents a can catch fire and or explode when ignited. So keep away from ignition sources.
