Would prefer not to have to buy all three.** A: No it's not necessary but can be preferred. I've found running just the fine requires it to be replaced much more frequently while just the coarse allows fine particles to clog other media used or allows them to pass back into tank. If I was gonna run just one I would use medium and clean once a month or so depending on tank stocking. I personally use all 3 in a sump and only rinse the fine every 2 months the coarse and medium get cleaned every 6 months **Q: Are both of these black and green ones rated at 30 ppi small enough gauge for shrimp tanks so shrimp won't get sucked into the pores of the sponge?** A: Hello, the green one is of 30 PPI while the black one is of 45 PPI, thank you. **Q: What is the lifespan of this sponge?
