We were getting scalded then frozen, then scalded then frozen while trying to take a shower. It was really bad. First I replaced the cartridge, but that didn’t work. Then I realized it was this inner pressure balance unit that had gone bad. Took me a little bit to figure out which part to order. You remove the cartridge and see a gray plate that is held in place by a brass ring. Take off the brass ring and pull this unit out. There apparently are several models that are similar but not exactly the same. I’m including a picture of the gray water channel plate that is the interface between this and the cartridge, and a picture of the cartridge itself (with the red ring). The cartridge is NOT included, but I’m showing it to help you determine compatibility. It might help you determine if this is the right part for you. Easy to install and once in place, we had control of the temperature in our shower once again. Very happy. Worked as promised. Direct replacement. Significant relief that all thoughts of professional intervention be banished. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Fix for full hot, full cold, no mix, banging noise *by R***B on May 15, 2025* An exact fit for my American Standard. When I removed the old valve, the green seals you see in the pic remained in the valve. I simply removed them with needle nose pliers. Just stating that so you can double check. Also, be sure to lube up those seals and be aware if the new valve doesn't seat by pushing it in, simple install the three flat head screws (attached pic) then carefully begin to tighten them evenly. It should pull the valve in place. just keep an eye on the black seal to ensure it doesn't get pinched. Fixed my water temperature problem and banging noise.
