These gorgeously austere black-and-white images described the travels and everyday life of the peoples he encountered while roaming Europe. Josef Koudelka: The Making of Exiles is an exploration of the genesis and the making of this photographic journey. Enhanced by numerous photographs that have never been published--in particular the photographer's self-portraits--and captions by Koudelka, it includes numerous archival documents (such as reproductions of his travel journals), thumbnail reproductions of the book's layout, an introduction by curator Clément Chéroux and an essay by photo-historian Michel Frizot, who spent hours interviewing Koudelka. Josef Koudelka was born in Moravia in 1938. Initially an aeronautic engineer, he launched full time into photography in the late sixties. In 1968, he photographed the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, publishing the results under the pseudonym P.P. (Prague Photographer). Koudelka left Czechoslovakia in 1970 and was briefly stateless before obtaining political asylum in England. Shortly afterwards, he joined Magnum Photos. In 1975 he published Gypsies . Koudelka has exhibited at the MoMA and at the International Centre of Photography in New York, at the Hayward Gallery in London, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | Dimensions | 24.38 x 1.78 x 30.48 cm | | Isbn 10 | 236511136X | | Isbn 13 | 978-2365111362 | | Item Weight | 1.18 kg | | Language | English | | Print Length | 160 pages | | Publication Date | 25 July 2017 | | Publisher | Editions Xavier Barral | ## Images ![Josef Koudelka: The Making of Exiles - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51g+IaQ66TL.jpg) ![Josef Koudelka: The Making of Exiles - Image 2](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61xbcQl1RML.jpg) ![Josef Koudelka: The Making of Exiles - Image 3](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71aQ9psJpIL.jpg) ![Josef Koudelka: The Making of Exiles - Image 4](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71LEmWs0nEL.jpg) ![Josef Koudelka: The Making of Exiles - Image 5](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71irKXKpLPL.jpg) ## Available Options This product comes in different **Format** options. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ One of the best book on understanding and seeing photography *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 29 March 2018* I teach photography and have been a photographer for almost 20 years. Do yourself a favor and get this one! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Five Stars *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 23 September 2017* very good ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Inside Koudelka's Mind: The Process of Making A Great Book! *by on Reviewed in the United States 17 November 2017* Follow: IG @PhotoStudiousContext:Been recently looking at Koudelka's work as a photography student because Koudelka, for me, has a great track record. Gypsies, Invasion, and then Exiles. All great bodies of work that span for years and years with the exception of Invasion.I did read the Koudelka retrospective book by Aperture which I highly recommend as well since it gives you the span of his various works. Now, about the book:I recommend getting this book since it gives us a microscope into making his body of work, Exiles. Great essays that give context into what made Koudelka, Koudelka. Then we later read into the mindset that gives way into the endurance the body of work requires. We look into the process of editing contact sheets, selecting images, and sequencing them. All in the span of 30 years...going back over and over and traveling all over Europe... 1000 rolls of film average per year... and then...ending up with 77 images. There is more into his process like looking back into images that did not make it and learning from them and journaling that I found really amazing to read about. In the age of disposable social media images, Koudelka gives his time on how to make lasting work.Highly recommend for the photography student! = )Follow: IG @PhotoStudious ## Frequently Bought Together - Josef Koudelka: The Making of Exiles - Josef Koudelka: Exiles - Josef Koudelka: Ruins --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.com.ar/products/56396960-josef-koudelka-the-making-of-exiles](https://www.desertcart.com.ar/products/56396960-josef-koudelka-the-making-of-exiles) --- *Product available on Desertcart Argentina* *Store origin: AR* *Last updated: 2026-11-05*
