Celebrated for its exploration of complex themes like love, revenge, and justice, this edition offers a compact, affordable way to experience one of the most studied and performed works in British drama, backed by a strong 4.5-star rating from over 200 readers. ## Description The Merchant of Venice is an intriguing drama of love, greed, and revenge. At its heart, the play contrasts the characters of the maddened and vengeful Shylock, a Venetian moneylender, with the gracious, level-headed Portia, a wealthy young woman besieged by suitors. At the play's climax, Shylock insists on the enforcement of a binding contract that will cost the life of the merchant Antonio — inciting Portia to mount a memorable defense. In this richly plotted drama, Shylock, whom Shakespeare endowed with all of the depth and vitality of his greatest characters, is not alone in his villainy. In scene after scene, a large cast of ambitious and scheming characters demonstrates that honesty is a quality often strained where matters of love and money are concerned. The gravity and suspense of the play's central plot, together with its romance, have made The Merchant of Venice a favorite of audiences, and one of the most studied and performed of Shakespeare's plays. It is reprinted here from an authoritative text, complete with explanatory footnotes. Review: A Play for All Ages - In high school, I loved this play because of the endearing relationship between Portia and Nerissa. In college, I loved the play because of Portia’s acerbic dismissal of her suitors (I think I had dated all of them.)Now, much later in life, I fear that the world has changed so little: the racism and materialism demonstrated in the play are with us still. This play does not preach; it explores, and we join the master in this exploration. Review: Came faster, and well packed! - Exactly what I needed! The book arrived on time, even earlier than expected. It was well packed, so it came intact. ## Features - Used Book in Good Condition ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | Best Sellers Rank | #309,351 in Books ( See Top 100 in Books ) #275 in British & Irish Dramas & Plays #321 in Shakespeare Dramas & Plays #354 in British & Irish Poetry | | Customer Reviews | 4.5 out of 5 stars 201 Reviews | ## Images ![The Merchant of Venice (Dover Thrift Editions: Plays) - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81EDvlZTAtL.jpg) ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Play for All Ages *by M***S on March 6, 2024* In high school, I loved this play because of the endearing relationship between Portia and Nerissa.
