It looks like it is supposed to be there - but it isn't a 1 way valve** A: I contacted the LaVazza coffee company and was told that the hole is a degassing valve. After it’s ground, carbon dioxide is removed by degassing, which is a process that takes place in silos containing nitrogen. The degassing process stabilizes the properties of the coffee. The pin holes are on their decaffinated coffee cans and their Premium house blend cans. **Q: How does this compare to their Lavazza Dek, which I've found to be rather weak tasting? We prefer a darker roast, more like Starbucks. Thanks.** A: I have not tasted Lavazza Dek, we have Lavazza in blu which we find to have a nice bold flavor. Now the Lavazza Espresso Decaffeinated also has a great bold flavor. If you put out a cup of the blu and a cup of the decaf, I couldn't taste the difference, but that's just me. I think you'll get a more like Starbucks taste with the Lavazza in blu or the Lavazza Decaf.
