Without the stand, it's harder to roll the nobby bar. The stand keeps the bar in place but allows the foot to move back and forth more freely. However, you cannot freeze or heat it. I'll use this one under my desk at work and a different one at home that I can freeze. NOTE that this item is smaller than it looks, but fit my foot fine. I wear women's 9-10 shoes. Large feet of men may be ok, but not sure. The color is nowhere near as bright as pictured! It does come in a nice storage bag.
