We took it out of the package, charged it for a few minutes, and then we were able to use it right away (without reading any instructions). Even the most uncoordinated members of our family were able to enjoy it after only a few minutes of practice. A couple of recommendations: start on a carpeted surface so that it moves more slowly at first and having a spotter can be helpful for the first few minutes while you get used to the speed and sensitivity of the board.
