Once the light-fixture canopy is screwed up into place the escutcheon plate stays in place nicely just by friction. Because of the stiffness of the plastic, the plate mounts easily and there is no gap between the ceiling and the edges of the plate. We have white ceilings, so I am using this unpainted and it looks fine. However, our ceiling paint is flat, and this escutcheon plate has a slight semi-gloss white appearance. If i ever get out my ceiling paint, I may paint it in place. But for now it looks great and it nicely complements our new light fixture.
