**Q: What type of steel is this made of?**
A: Short answer,unknown metal composition. 
I am very please with its ergonomics and construction metal hardness in my opinion is typical of an axe/ hatchet head. I let my banshee nephew use it to clear some brush.I expected it take some abuse. Took a couple minutes with a file good as new. I would buy another if I didn't already have four different ones already.
