## Description

The Agricola is both a portrait of Julius Agricola - the most famous governor of Roman Britain and Tacitus' well-loved and respected father-in-law - and the first detailed account of Britain that has come down to us. It offers fascinating descriptions of the geography, climate and peoples of the country, and a succinct account of the early stages of the Roman occupation, nearly fatally undermined by Boudicca's revolt in AD 61 but consolidated by campaigns that took Agricola as far as Anglesey and northern Scotland. The warlike German tribes are the focus of Tacitus' attention in the Germania , which, like the Agricola , often compares the behaviour of 'barbarian' peoples favourably with the decadence and corruption of Imperial Rome.

Review: Brilliant! - I absolutely loved these two works of Tacitus. It’s amazing to think you are actually reading first hand accounts of the very first encounters, discoveries and recorded histories of Britannia and Germania. Germania is the better work as Agricola is more of a biography or eulogy to Tacitus’ father-in-law and his governorship of Britannia and his conquest of Caledonia (modern day Scotland) etc. Agricola has a brief description of Britannia, while Germania is a full, detailed and in depth ethnography of all of Northern Europe. Tacitus describes the myriad of different tribes that inhabit modern day Holland to Germany, the Czech Republic, all the way to the Black Sea and all the way up to Sweden, Lapland and the Baltic states (although none of those modern day names are used). To reiterate, it’s truly awesome to get first hand accounts of the very first discoveries and recorded histories of Northern Europe. Definitely highly recommend this short book!
Review: Great translation - This is a great translation of a text that i had to read for a university seminar. It is clear and conicise. A great read also if you want to find out more about the Roman conquests in Britain as well as some of the people involved.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good starter read of history written in the Classical era.
*by J***T on 26 June 2017*

This is the 2009 edition of the original Penguin Classics edition and translation of 1948. The introduction and notes were completely rewritten by J B Rives for the 2009 edition. The introduction and notes are very helpful in explaining things that might be meaningless to a 20th century general reader interested in learning something about Roman history and Roman historical writing. In fact the notes must be approaching the length of the translation of the original text by Tacitus. The maps are clearer and more useful than the original maps of the 1948 edition. The book may not be of interest to the average reader of history, but is a good start for someone who is interested specifically in Historical writing of the Classical era. It deals with very specific topics in the 1st century AD relating to the Roman Empire.
