It was a good machine for the price. But horribly noisy. I recently gave it a hoover and wondered what was making the noise. Turns out to be a mixture of the old 3.5 inch hard drive that is mounted firmly to the frame, and the 80mm fan that cools the heatsink attached to the motherboard. I replaced the hard drive with an SSD which made it much quieter and faster, and then got this 80mm Coolink PWM fan.It took me about 15 minutes, and if you follow these instructions it will take you about 10 minutes to swap this fan into your Dell Vostro 400:Remove the power connector from the back of your Vostro 400 to make it safe.Open the case.There are four tiny screws, one in each corner of the fan. Undo these. You'll need a small cross head screwdriver with a shaft longer than an inch to reach through the top hole down to the screw you are undoing. Don't bother undoing the great big silver screws that hold the heatsink in place, and don't bother undoing the four small black screws that are not in the four corners of the fan.Remove the original fan that was supplied with your Dell, take it outside, make a bonfire in your garden and burn it while drinking a celebratory glass of Champagne. That noisy old fan can no longer hurt your ears.Hoover the heatsink that you have now exposed by removing the old fan so that air can pass freely through it.Screw the new fan in. The only tricky bit here is holding the tiny screws in the right place because they are hard to reach.Plug the four pin plug back onto the motherboard where you removed the old fan's connector from.Being careful not to electrocute yourself you might want to turn your PC on with the cover removed so you can see your fan spinning around almost silently.Reassemble your PC.My Vostro 400 now has a total of four fans in it and is so close to being silent it's amazing, compared to the jet taking off we used to have to live with. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Not cheap as chips but worth it, great value *by F***N on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 12 October 2018* After bearing with other (branded) 80mm PWM fans for almost a year that started rattling after some months - but were dirt cheap but still had PWM/sharing - I finally gave up and opted for these fans.If you needed 80mm PWM fans for a small ITX/mATX build(s) (I'm using a stack of SilverStone Milos) you know that the options are quite limited compared to 120/140. Sure if you have plenty of money go for Noctua or similar - but most are on a budget.I finally opted for these (4 to test on a system) and boy - big difference - they are much quieter though in fairness they don't seem to push as much air. For a server that runs in "efficiency mode" that is fine, I don't see a noticeable delta in CPU / HDD temperatures. I decided to replace the fan with the Coolink SWiF2-80P and I really couldn't be happier. It's like I've got a new computer, lovely and quiet now - unbelievable!. In fact it's so whisper quiet, its highlighted the fact that the case fan has a slight whirring sound to it. So, I'm about to place another order for the 92mm case fan by Coolink, I have no doubt at all the case fan will be as just as good quality and VERY quiet.
