Orange Mountain Music presents the premiere recording of Philip Glass' 1991 score to Errol Morris' film 'A Brief History of Time' about the life and work of Stephen Hawking. This film marked the second of three famous collaborations between composer Glass and director Morris: The first was 'A Thin Blue Line' (OMM0007) and the third was 'The Fog of War' (OMM0010), which won the Academy Award for best documentary.

A Soundtrack of Short Tracks
I think that this CD is for die-hard Philip Glass fans. This is because the tracks are limited (literally) by their short duration. There are 20 tracks that last between 1:23 minutes and 4:48 minutes, and these are more like samples. This isn't surprising as the CD is a soundtrack of a film by Errol Morris, and the film has determined this array of soundbites. The tracks don't really hang together when listening to the CD without the visual support of the film. The short tracks don't seem to relate musically, resulting in a kind of random play feel rather than a coherent soundtrack. However, the music is very recognisably by Philip Glass, and I enjoyed listening to it. The film was released in 1991, so the music itself isn;t recently composed. I'm trying to relate these tracks to other pieces that Glass has composed and some sound familiar, but many are unique (to me, at least).I was disappointed with the CD's packaging as it came in a cardboard slipcase which is already beginning to look worn - I've only had it one day! There was very little information printed on the sleave. For instance, the conductor was Michael Reisman but there was no mention of who performed the music... So downloading the music would be a good option unless you are one of those people like me who have to have the CD.In summary, add this to your collection!
